Proposed New Wine Shop

Neighborhood Meeting
Wednesday, April 29  6PM
St. Paul Lutheran Church Conference Room

A large new wine shop is being proposed, to be located in one of the empty suites within the Roberts complex on the corner of Rampart and Elysian Fields. Since this will require conditional use, the operator must host a community meeting to hear concerns and answer questions. This is that meeting. If you have questions or concerns, I encourage you to attend. They have not started a build-out, so the reaction from the neighborhood may carry some weight in their final decision.

Yes, I have feelings about it. Yes, these are people I already know. And yes, I've spoken with them about my concern, which is the 1/2-mile proximity to both Faubourg Wines and Grande Krewe. In response, they expressed a very rosy, fuzzy view that everything will somehow just work out fine. I hope they are right! However, it doesn't seem very logical.

While I would love to have wine shops on every block, our little neighborhood has neither the population density nor the demographics to support a third specialty wine retailer- let alone one that will be larger than both of the existing ones (2600sf).

When I pointed this out, they didn't deny it. My sense is that they are well-aware of the over-saturation they are creating, and they just don't want to say it out loud.

Anyway, here's what I know:

The operator partner spent most of her wine career in NYC before coming here to open a wine bar in the CBD five years ago. It's called Pluck. She lives in the Marigny. I've socialized with her many times, and considered her a friend before this retail wine shop plan crossed my radar. (No, she didn't tell me.)

The financial partner (the money behind Pluck and this new wine shop project) lives in New York City, works in tech, is a wine collector, is fanatical about a specific Champagne producer, and enjoys owning a wine bar in New Orleans.

So, that's what's happening. As I said, if you have questions or concerns, please go to the meeting and be heard. It's this Wednesday, April 29 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in the conference room at 6 PM.

And if you think my worry about this is an over-reaction, I hope you're right. I always welcome words of encouragement, but please don't give me the line about rising tides lifting all ships, unless you're looking for an angry rant.

As always, your support is deeply appreciated. We strive every day to meet you where you are, to be helpful and kind, to maintain a fearless and friendly space, to offer an exciting array of wines to enhance your life,  and to serve this community in the ways we can, as best we can.

XO,  Cat

P.S. - If you can't make it to the meeting, but want to share your thoughts with the operators,

you can send them an email at info@pluckwines.com
